STEM Transfer Summer Start Program

STEM Transfer Summer Start Program

– They often don’t know
what the program is about, and don’t quite understand what they’ve gotten
themselves into. – The Transfer
Summer Start Program is an innovative program for
incoming transfer students who want to come to UCSB early, during the second
part of summer. – I felt very … very prioritized as a student. As someone who comes in
not knowing what to do. – And they really helped me
get integrated to the school, helped me feel welcome. – Coming from, like,
a 16-week semester to a 10-week is really intense. So it was nice having
that super intensive six-week program to kinda
get you integrated into it. – It’s really, I think, the
best decision you’re gonna make. – It’s for students
that are in majors of chemistry and biochemistry,
economics, biology, physics, and psychological
and brain sciences. Students receive funding for
up to nine course credits, and their campus-based fee. – The main goal is to
kinda get them used to and transitioning into life
here at UC Santa Barbara, and into the major. – Getting a program
set up to help sort of introduce them to
the intricacies of campus, and, you know, the
different resources here, and the challenges
that come along with getting into classes, you know, adjusting
to the quarter system, how to approach professors,
things like that. Those are some of the things that really needed
to be addressed. – Students also are able
to take part in a course that’s dedicated to making sure that they are successful
in their major. Students will also receive a dedicated
undergraduate advisor. – It benefits them to see
that professors are just, you know, normal people. We’re accessible, we want to be there for them. – They bring in weekly
professors, graduate students, to come and talk to
us about their work, about possible career choices, about how to get into academia, how to get into graduate school, so they provide a
lot of one-on-one,
personalized training and information that you can’t,
you can’t get anywhere else. – Because of the
transfer program, I’m going in a new route and I’m really excited about it. – For example, for me,
my main goal coming here was to get a bachelor’s degree. I didn’t think of
anything beyond that. But through that program,
it really opened my eyes to everything that this
university has to offer, and it really taught
me how I could maximize the opportunities that
are available to me here. – It’s like, you’re going
in to the fall quarter having already,
like, made friends, and like, gotten to
know the school already. – It’s hard to initially
break into friend groups, especially coming from
kids that are freshman and were in the
same dorms together, so this is kind of like
your dorm experience. It really helped
me get off running as soon as I got here. – So if it wasn’t for
the Summer Start program here at UCSB, I
don’t think I would be in the same place
where I am now. – Space is limited
in the program, so make sure that you get
your application in early. It really is a very
unique program, and we hope to see
you this summer. (upbeat music) (vocalization)
